RC Car Maintenance Checklist

Toy RC cars fail from neglect far more than from crashes: hair round an axle, a pack stored flat, grit in the gears. Ten minutes of care a week is the difference between a car that lasts a season and one that lasts five years.

After every run (2 minutes)

Switch off car, then remote.
Brush dust off the chassis; blow out the wheel wells.
Pull any hair or thread off the axles.
Put the pack on charge if you will drive again within a day; otherwise leave it at half.

Weekly (5 minutes)

Turn the car over. Spin each wheel — all four should turn freely and quietly.
Check the wheel nuts or push-on hubs are tight.
Check the battery plug and remote batteries.
Wipe the body with a damp microfibre; dry it.

Monthly (10 minutes)

Open the gearbox cover if it has one; brush out grit. Do not oil toy gears — it attracts dust.
Check the steering: full lock both ways, wheels return to centre. If not, a link has popped off its ball.
Look at the pack. Any swelling — replace it.
On drift cars, swap or rotate the drift tyres to even out wear.
On off-road trucks, check the shock towers and suspension arms for cracks after jumps.

Before storing for a month or more

Charge the pack to about half, remove it from the car, and store both somewhere cool and dry. Remove AA cells from the remote — a leaked cell destroys the contacts. See RC batteries explained.

When to stop repairing

How often should I clean my RC car?

A quick brush after every run and a proper check weekly. Monthly, open the gearbox cover and inspect the steering and battery.

Should I oil my RC car gears?

Not on a toy-grade car. Oil attracts dust and grit into plastic gears and wears them faster. Keep them clean and dry.

How do I store an RC car for a long time?

Pack at half charge and removed from the car, AA cells out of the remote, everything in a dry cupboard away from heat.
